Amerykańska performerka Meredith Monk znana jest przede wszystkim z innowacyjnych technik wokalnych i spektakli łączących: śpiew, instrumenty, balet i teatr. W 1978 r. założyła słynny Meredith Monk and Vocal Ensemble. Jeśli istnieje awangarda, to Meredith Monk jest jej ważną przedstawicielką.

Od 1981 r. jej albumy wydaje ECM Records, jest ich już w katalogu jedenaście. Po raz pierwszy Manfred Eicher, szef ECM-u zamówił wykonanie kompozycji Meredith Monk z lat 1971-2006 u pary pianistów: Ursuli Oppens i Bruce`a Brubakera.

Tytuł albumu "Piano Songs" wziął się stąd, że Meredith Monk zawsze wykonuje swoje utwory, dośpiewując lub melorecytując ich znaczne partie. Wiele z nich jest improwizowanych, większość ma nuty. Z nich korzysta para pianistów.

W utworze "Folkdance" pokrzykują i klaszczą w dłonie. Cztery tematy Ursula Oppens i Bruce Brubaker wykonują solo, pozostałe na dwa fortepiany bądź na cztery ręce. Kompozytorka zaczęła komponować najpierw na głos, następnie na głos i organy, a dopiero później na fortepian.

Pozostając pod wpływem swych wczesnych mistrzów: Mompou, Satiego i Bartóka, a także późniejszych: Reicha, Cage`a i Glassa, Meredith Monk stworzyła niepowtarzalny styl: lekki i dynamiczny zarazem, melodyjny, sugestywny w powtarzających się rytmicznych frazach. Fascynująca muzyka.

The American performer Meredith Monk is known primarily for her innovative vocal techniques and performances combining singing, instruments, ballet and theater. In 1978 she founded the famous Meredith Monk and Vocal Ensemble. If there is an avant-garde, then Meredith Monk is its important representative.

Since 1981, her albums have been released by ECM Records, there are already eleven of them in the catalog. For the first time, Manfred Eicher, the head of the ECM commissioned a 1971-2006 composition by Meredith Monk from a pair of pianists: Ursula Oppens and Bruce Brubaker.

The title of the album "Piano Songs" comes from the fact that Meredith Monk always performs his songs by singing or reciting large parts of them. A lot of them are improvised, most of them have notes. They are used by a pair of pianists.

In the song "Folkdance" they shout and clap their hands. Ursula Oppens and Bruce Brubaker perform four themes solo, the others for two pianos or for four hands. The composer began composing first for voice, then for voice and organ, and only later for piano.

Under the influence of her early masters: Mompou, Sati and Bartók, as well as later ones: Reich, Cage and Glass, Meredith Monk created a unique style: light and dynamic at the same time, melodic, evocative in repeated rhythmic phrases.
